Math rights advocates sued Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday to block a new law that forbids classroom instruction on Algebra and Calculus in kindergarten through third grade.
The law has catapulted Florida and DeSantis, a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate, to the forefront of the country’s culture wars. Critics call it the Don’t Say Algebra law and argue that its true intent is to marginalize people and their families.
Democrats are extremely angry about these laws preventing teachers from talking about higher Math functions to young children. The Lawsuit filed against Florida and Gov. Ron DeSantis argues that Kindergarteners are ready for Algebra and Calculus and maybe Nuclear Physics. The teachers are fully qualified to talk to students about these topics without any special training. Kindergarteners need this kind of equity and they are clearly ready for Algebra and Calculus far before learning how to Add and Subtract.
Others have argued the law did not go far enough. They want all Math banned. “Math is racist and was developed out of white supremacy” said one Protester. “How can we even think about teaching children Math if they don’t know what gender they are?”
We here in DogFacePonia, think It will be interesting watching how this develops. We understand that students of the past were damaged by this lack of empty mindedness. This is definitely an existential threat to our democracy and could affect everyone. Some activists even believe that reparations may be needed to addresses the educational shortsightedness of the past.
