What is a bellwether and did we just have one?
A bellwether has come to refer to someone who takes initiative or who actively establishes a trend that is taken up by others. This usage first appeared in English in the 13th century. This is clearly cultural appropriation.
Merriam-Webster says we usually think of sheep more as followers than leaders, but in a flock one sheep must lead the way. This is clearly not Biden. Long ago, it was common practice for shepherds to hang a bell around the neck of one sheep in their flock, thereby designating it the lead sheep. This animal was called the bellwether, a word formed by a combination of the Middle English words belle (meaning “bell”) and wether (a noun that refers to a male sheep that has been castrated. Sounds like 13th Century LBTQ to me). Hmmm maybe it is Biden after all.
Many observers deemed the Virginia Governor’s race a bellwether for Dems’ 2022 midterm campaigns. Celebrating the outcome, former President Trump said this: “I didn’t even have to go rally for Youngkin, because McAuliffe did it for me. Thank you to the MAGA voters for turning out big!” Donald Trump wants to convince you he is the bellwether although clearly he doesn’t know what a wether is. 🙂
What is Glenn Youngkin?
Apparently, the electorate has hung a bell around the neck Glenn Youngkin according to cable news. They see voters as sheep and need to be led. The question is whether the voters agree. Democrats are clearly confused. They thought Youngkin identified as a racist in a sweater vest not a bellwether. But we are not sure whether they know the difference. Maybe they have had too much CRT in class and not enough History, Math and Science. If all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail. The Democrats sure got nailed in Virginia. When Biden was informed of the election news, Biden crapped his pants and yelled “Let’s go Branden!”
It wasn’t all bad for McAuliffe, he can now retire from politics. He was going to run for President. Now it seems that if he can’t win Virginia he won’t have much of a chance. Maybe he can spend some time with his soon to be unemployed buddy Ralph Northam and Andrew Cuomo. That is if Cuomo is not in prison yet. They can reminisce about the good times they had being governor and wearing black face. We also heard McAuliffe won a Halloween costume contest. The voters thought he was dressed as Gary Busey. Voters also said they would have preferred Busey over McAuliffe as Governor.
We at DogFacePonia are considering hanging a bell around one of our ponies. The pony objected to the other part of the definition of bellwether. Right now it looks like Democrats can fill that definition.
